Secure Copy (SCP) is a replacement for FTP. It encrypts the connections between computers so that usernames and passwords are not sent across the network in plain text.
We have installed SCP on all of the Statistics Department unix servers, and have stopped using FTP. Syntax-wise, SCP works more like cp than ftp. The SCP command works using the following syntax:Installing WinSCP on a Windows machine
- Download the latest WinSCP2 installation package. It can be obtained from the WinSCP website.
- Make a temporary folder.
- Get the file and save it in the temporary folder.
- Double-click on the installer to start the install process.
- For most users, all the default options are ok. After installation the application will start up immediately.
- Type login.stat.ufl.edu in the Host name box.
- Type your username in the User name box.
- Click on the phrase Stored Sessions in the left column of the window.
- Click the Save button.
- Click the OK button when the saved session pops up.
- A Warning box will pop-up, stating "The servers' host key is not cached in the registry." Click the Yes button.
- A password box will pop-up. Enter your password and then click on the OK button.
- If you need Help, check out Help on the menu.
- To exit WinSCP, from the menu bar click on Session then Disconnect.
Starting a Session
- Double-click on the WinSCP2 icon on your Windows desktop.
- Double-click on your saved session which will be username@login.stat.ufl.edu.
Please send email to system@stat.ufl.edu if you require assistance with installing or using SCP, or if any of the links above are broken.
