SCP Secure Copy Software

Overview of SCP
PC client software

Secure Copy (SCP) is a replacement for FTP. It encrypts the connections between computers so that usernames and passwords are not sent across the network in plain text.

We have installed SCP on all of the Statistics Department unix servers, and have stopped using FTP. Syntax-wise, SCP works more like cp than ftp. The SCP command works using the following syntax:

After connecting to the remote machine, it will prompt you for your password. You can SCP files both to and from a remote machine. If the account on the other system uses another username, you can use the syntax below:

SCP will then prompt for the password for the user listed.

The Windows computers in the department have SCP clients installed on them. For connecting from home computers, users will need to download and install appropriate client software for their systems.

Users with Linux, older versions of Windows, and MacOS on their computers at home should contact
system@stat.ufl.edu about client software for their systems.
