Software at stat is linked into /usr/local/* with the CMU depot
program. New software is installed in /pkg1-/pkg3 in a
directory named for the program and version number. This directory is
then linked to /usr/local/depot as PackageName without
refernce to version number (in most cases). For example, the latest
version of R is:
/pkg2/R-1.2.0.patched
/usr/local/depot/R -> /pkg2/R-1.2.0.patched
After linking the new version (unlinking the previous version first) one cd's to /usr/local/ and runs the depot program. This must be done on each of the servers. One the name server, it is also necessary to first remove the file /usr/local/etc/ndc which is a special file that cannot be handled by depot.
