The World Wide Web Virtual Library is a non-profit group which maintain a library of links to various information. We (stat) maintain the Statistics section, which was started by Mike Conlon and is currently maintained by Allan West. As maintainers of a WWWVL site, the department has a membership in the WWWVL organization, as provided for in the constitution and bylaws.
Elsewhere at UF, professor Gene R. Thursby <gthursby@religion.ufl.edu> is actively involved and was responsible for posting a voting notice 8/1/2000. When asked about membership, he said that the department, in the guise of webmaster, has a membership. As such, a vote was registered from <webmaster@stat.ufl.edu> on 8/2/2000.
Good references are people who send in URLs, and grad students from foreign countries who can read non-latin alphabets and find stat departments in their home country. We generally list any official organization, school, legitimate business or other site which we receive a URL for. Aim for one link per institution, though an administratively separate Biostat and Stat division may count as unique. Checking the link before adding it is always a good idea.
The WWVL has some guidelines for member pages. We are well over the recommended page size as of 8/2/2000, but there isn't a specific reommendation for what to do about that.
