Statistics Department DNS

Domain Name Service is provided by a locally compiled version of Bind 8.2.2pl5 which looks for the configuration file in /usr/local/etc/master.conf or /usr/local/etc/named.conf depending on the machine's IP configuration and which is started by a custom startup file which is linked to /etc/rc2.d/S72localbind and /usr/local/etc/localbind. This startup file checks for the (hard coded) IP adddress of the DNS master and then starts Bind with the correct config file.

DNS databse files for statistics-managed zones are in an SCCS repository. To edit them, us emacs to open the appropriate .db file in /usr/local/lib/dns/ and then check out the file using C-x v v which activates the SCCS system in emacs. Answer No to the question File has unlocked changes, claim lock retaining changes then answer yes to the question Revert to checked-in version, instead to get the correct version.

When you're ready, increment the serial number, save the file, and check it back in by typing C-x v v -- enter a note about the changes you made and type C-c C-c to complete the check-in.

The Department of Statistics has four domains assigned to it in the ufl.edu heirarchy. They are hosted by the CLAS and Biostat name servers as follows:

In the future CLASNET will likely want part of the 128.227.141.* subnet returned for use in another building. Statistics should work to retain the reverse DNS for subnet 141 unless and until all DNS is moved to the college level. This affords greater ability to move services and test new systems without outside intervention.

In Griffin-Floyd some gear is on private IP for security reasons, including the networking gear, printers, and power-control gear. Those devices are all statically configured rather than using BOOTP to force notification from CLASNET in case they desire to renumber the equipment. This is necessary since the forward DNS records are still *.stat.ufl.edu while the PTR records are CLAS-controlled.
