Rewiring Griffin-Floyd

Griffin-Floyd hall was not wired with Category 5 cable and blocks, so the computer network cannot run at 100MBps over the existing cable. The arrival of new machines which are capable of 100MBps ethernet, and the need for better server performance, means that Griffin-Floyd should get upgraded network wiring.

The 2001-2002 budget should include a request for CLASNET to upgrade the building wiring. This may happen in 2001 if the rewiring of the Chemistry department proceeds as planned and no other pressing wiring projects interfere. The current rewiring involves running three cables to each faceplate, two CAT-5 (orange) jacks for data and a third CAT-5 (blue) jack for voice. Voice is CAT-5 "just in case" since voice over IP (VOIP) or some other technology may require it later.
