Configuring Thunderbird 0.5 for IMAP on old server minke

Reading email with IMAP requires Mozilla's Thunderbird 0.5 or later.
Using the IMAP protocol instead of POP allows a user to read email and
save it on the server from any computer in any location, including home
computers and computers at other institutions. IMAP with SSL, which
Thunderbird supports, makes the connection secure so that your password
cannot be seen on the network.
If you have previously used another mail program, please contact system@stat.ufl.edu about converting
your current mail into IMAP compatible mail and moving any existing mail
folders to the appropriate location. That way no mail will be lost, and all
of your existing messages will be available to you.
To configure your Thunderbird to read Statistics Department email
you will need to complete these one-time setup steps:
- Download Thunderbird from http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird
- When you expand the zip file you just downloaded, it will
create a "thunderbird" folder. This folder contains the Thunderbird
program and configuration files.
Be sure to note where you expanded the zip file.
- Find the "thunderbird" folder and double-click on it.
- You should see a "thunderbird.exe" program file in there.
Right click on "thunderbird.exe" and select Copy.
- Now right click on your desktop and select Paste.
- Now you can double-click on your new desktop icon to start Thunderbird.
- The first time it starts, it will ask you:
- Should Thunderbird be your default email application -- click yes
- Do you want to convert your Netscape settings --click yes
- If you have not used Netscape, then it will start the New Account Wizard.
Follow the same directions as for Mozilla
PLEASE NOTE:
Due to new security policies by UF, you MUST change the Outgoing SMTP
Server to your Internet Service Provider's SMTP server.
For example, if you use Gatorlink Dialup, their SMTP server is smtp.ufl.edu
