Configuring Mozilla 1.6 for IMAP on old server minke

Reading email with IMAP requires Mozilla 1.6 (although, we have found versions as early as 1.2 work as well, you will miss out on Mozilla's junk mail controls). Using the IMAP protocol instead of POP allows a user to read email and save it on the server from any computer in any location, including home computers and computers at other institutions. IMAP with SSL, which Mozilla supports, makes the connection secure so that your password cannot be seen on the network.

If you have previously used another mail program, please contact system@stat.ufl.edu about converting your current mail into IMAP compatible mail and moving any existing mail folders to the appropriate location. That way no mail will be lost, and all of your existing messages will be available to you.

Make sure you use the proper 'Outgoing Mailserver' when going through the steps below. They are...

Statistics: mailhost.stat.ufl.edu
Gatorlink: smtp.ufl.edu

To configure your Mozilla to read Statistics Department email you will need to complete these one-time setup steps:

Download the full version of Mozilla 1.6 from http://www.mozilla.org/products/mozilla1.x
When the installer prompts you, always click "Next" or "Accept" or "Install"
The Mozilla web browswer will automatically open after the installation is complete.
Choose whether you would like Mozilla as your default browser.
On To Email...
Now click on Start -> Programs -> Mozilla -> Mail
Click the "Do not display.." box and then "Yes" when Mozilla asks to be your default mail application
If you have been using Netscape, Mozilla will ask if you want to convert your profile -- select yes, convert.
If you have not used Netscape, then Mozilla will start the new account wizard
Click Next
Next is the Identification window. Enter your full name and your Statistics email address in the corresponding spaces. Click Next.
This is the Server Information window. Be sure to click the IMAP button. The incoming mail server is mailhost.stat.ufl.edu Click Next
Now your Statistics username. Then click Next
Now the Account Name. This is what you will see on the folder side of the window. Type in what you want to call it and click Next.
Click Finish and you are done with the wizard.
One Last Thing...
Due to new security policies by UF, you MUST change the Outgoing SMTP Server to your ISP's SMTP server
In the Email window, at the top, click on Edit -> Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings
In the new window that pops up, click on Outgoing Server (SMTP) on the left side of the window.
On the right side of the window, the Server Name should be the outgoing SMTP server for your Internet Service Provider.
For example, if you use Gatorlink dialup as your ISP (to connect to the internet) then the server name will be smtp.ufl.edu
And Finally...
If it asks about a New Site Certificate, be sure to check the Accept This Certificate Forever option.
If there's something you want to change about the look or feel of Mozilla, click on Edit -> Preferences and change whatever you feel should be different.
