How to Get Help
For help with hardware or software in the Department of Statistics,
send email to system a-t stat do-t ufl do-t edu. This is the list of
administrators for the departmental network. Please do not send
email to any individual administrator - that individual may be
unavailable, but the list goes to everyone who can help.
Use
system for everything except reporting email outages. If your problem
is with sending email, try using a different email client, or call the
nearest system administrator.
When reporting a problem, please include as much of the following
information as possible. This will aid in diagnosing the cause of your
problem as quickly and accurately as possible.
- What machine were you working on?
- The names of machines are posted on the monitors, and also
appear on the top of xterm windows.
- What program were you using?
- If you are having trouble with a specific program, such as
Netscape or SAS, please include the program name.
- What were you trying to do?
- What were you attempting to accomplish, or expecting to see
on the screen or page when you noted the problem?
- What actually happened?
- What was different in actuality from your expectations
above? Please include exact text of error messages, whenever
possible. This is the most important part
of the message. Please be as explicit as possible.
- Is the error reproducible?
- If you follow the same steps, does the problem occur the same
way each time? If it only occurs intermittently, this is also
useful to know.
- How long has the error been a problem?
- Has this problem only occurred in the last few minutes, hours,
or days? If it's intermittent, when was the first time you
remember seeing it? We encourage reports of trouble as soon as
possible, so that you never have to say "it's been a problem for
the last several weeks."
