UF-Statistics Computing Environment

The Department of Statistics owns, maintains, and operates a network of 54 Sun Unix machines, 16 Intel workstations, 19 Intel laptops, and a handful of PowerPC laptops. The Sun machines have between 32 and 4096 megabytes of memory and from 1 to 4 processors; Intel workstations range from 64 megabytes of memory with Pentium processors to 512 megabytes of memory with Pentium IV processors.

Disk storage on the network exceeds 400 gigabytes and workstations range from 2 gigabytes of local storage to 130 gigabytes. Printing is performed via 5 networked workgroup laser printers and 30 personal laser printers.

Network services include nightly backups of user network storage, bootp, DNS, SAMBA, HTTP, NFS/NIS, FTP, SSL IMAP, SSH, and a switched 10Mb network connecting to CLASNet. The CLASNet connection provides Internet and Internet2 access to the Department.

Workstation operating systems include Solaris 2.6 through 2.8, Windows 95 and 2000, and Redhat Linux 7.2. Applications available include the S-Plus system, the SAS system, Mathematica, R, GLIM, TeX (LaTeX), WordPerfect, Microsoft Office 97/2000, C and C++, FORTRAN, Minitab, SPSS, ITSM, Adobe Photoshop and PageMaker, and a host of others.

A full-time system manager operates and maintains the system environment, assisted by additional staff.
