1997Dec12: Installed NEdit 5.0
Installed NEdit 5.0 on all servers. NEdit is a GUI style plain-text editor for X/Motif systems. It is very easy to use, especially for those familiar with the Macintosh or MS Windows style of interface, combining full use of the mouse and window manager, with keystroke efficiency and a full complement of powerful editing commands. See: http://www-pat.fnal.gov/nirvana/nedit.html for documentation and more information.
1997Dec06: DHCP server replaced
The DHCP daemon we were running was causing problems for CLAS subnet 140 Win95 machines due to a known bug with multiple ethernet ports on Solaris 2.x machines, see http://www.isc.org/dhcp-v1.html. The internet software consortium (ISC) DHCP server was replaced with an updated version of the CMU bootpd. The updated version, from Dallas Antley of CLAS, also serves DHCP.
1997Oct11: Moved primary server to ocean
The old server, marlin, was replaced with a new workstation, ocean, which is an Ultra 1/170. All references to the main server should be to stat.ufl.edu rather than marlin or ocean. The licensed statistical software was transferred later, and will be moved again to a new compute server in the spring or summer of 1998. Marlin has since died unrecoverably.
1997Oct08: Installed Perl 5.004
The latest version of Perl, 5.004, was installed by Randy Fischer and Phil Padgett. Perl (practical extraction and reporting language) is a workhorse scripting language used widely in system administration and web development.
1997Oct02: Start moving user files to manatee
In an effort to provide better reliability, CLAS and IFAS stat user directories will be moved to the new Netra NFS file server, manatee. Manatee's redundant disk array (RAID5), integral UPS and the lack of background jobs should make manatee the most stable file server in the statistics group.
1997Sep30: Marlin's UPS dies
The uniterruptible power supply (UPS) for marlin, the primary server, suffered catastrophic failure and caused marlin to lose power multiple times. The old UPS was replaced with a new model which has better diagnostic and warning features.
1997Aug10: Upgraded to SAS 6.12
Upgraded from SAS 6.11 to SAS 6.12 on the servers at Griffin/Floyd,
Biostat, CMS, and GCRC. See http://www.sas.com/service/techsup/wn612/wn612.htm for
a list of what's new in 6.12.
1997Jun28: Installed DHCP server
Installed and configured ISC's (Internet Software Consortium) DHCP
(Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server on marlin. DHCP is used
to assign network configuration information to the new PCs on bootup.
This simplifies the task of setting up and maintaining the PCs as
networked devices.
1997Jun28: Installed SAMBA server
Installed and configured SAMBA on marlin. SAMBA is used to provide
file and print services to the new PCs using the SMB network protocol.
Samba is also used to authenticate the users against our standard
password map on the Unix server.
1997Apr29: Recovered from server (marlin) crash
Marlin's boot/root drive experienced multiple read errors in the / and
/usr partitions. The defective 2.1gig drive was replaced with a 1.3gig
drive on which a fresh install of Solaris 2.5 was added and all local
customizations were added to get marlin back to a functional state. A
few loose ends remain and such things as printing to HPJetDirect printers
and access through the modem pool need work.
1997Apr14: Installed XEmacs 19.15
Installed XEmacs on marlin and equaled to each server.
XEmacs is a powerful, extensible text editor with full GUI support,
initially based on an early version of GNU Emacs 19 from the Free
Software Foundation and since kept up to date with recent versions of
that product. XEmacs stems from a collaboration of Lucid, Inc. with
Sun Microsystems, Inc. and the University of Illinois with additional
support having been provided by Amdahl Corporation.
1997Mar28: Replaced AMD with automounter
Completed the phased out the use of AMD for auto-mounting user accounts
on remote systems. Now have standardized on the use of Sun's automounter
for all Griffin/Floyd, Biostat, and CMS workstations. Sun's automounter
appears to work more efficiently than AMD. The primary reason for
making the swap to support NFS 3 which came as part of the Solaris 2.5
upgrade.
1997Mar03: New Department website
The newly redesigned UF/Statistics department website is now online. (http://www.stat.ufl.edu)
The new website includes new graphics designed by Eye4 here in Gainesville
and contains all new content. In particular, there are (will be)
official brouchure style webpages for each of the Department's faculty
and staff. Links to individuals "personal" home pages will
be provided on these pages.
As part of the new website installation, the CERN web server that was used
for the old website has been replaced with the Netscape Enterprise web
server. There are some minor difference in web delivery because of
the server change. If you notice any differences please notify system.
