Washington State University Seattle IREACH
IREACH includes a multidisciplinary faculty who conduct extramurally funded research in the areas of Native health, Latino health, and behavioral health in vulnerable populations. IREACH is a unit with both core senior and junior faculty, and about 40 staff. It has its own fiscal unit and an in-house editor and IRB coordinator. The Area
Seattle
Located on the Puget Sound in northwestern Washington, Seattle is a large city, and home to over 650,000 residents as well as Fortune 500 companies and a lively performing arts and sports scene. Known as the “Emerald City” due to the lush surrounding greenery, the city’s proximity to mountains and forest also make it an eclectic mix of urban and rural living. Seattle is one of the fastest growing cities in the country. It is the home to major philanthropic organizations, many institutions of higher learning, a large diversity of cultural events, restaurants, parks and recreational opportunities, and international corporations such as Amazon, Facebook, Starbucks, and Boeing.

IREACH’s office in Seattle is located in the middle of Seattle’s three major urban hot spots – South Lake Union, the Central Business District, and Capitol Hill – and is easily accessible from almost anywhere in the metropolitan area. On-site perks include green space and patio gathering spots, complimentary citywide shuttle, EV charging stations, on-site showers/locker rooms, and bike storage. The Seattle office is linked to both the Spokane and Pullman campuses through a sophisticated videoconferencing system that makes attending meetings and even teaching classes possible at a distance.

Spokane
Located in the University District along the riverfront in downtown Spokane, WSU Spokane is the University’s health sciences education and research campus. The campus is home to the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, scheduled to welcome its charter class in August 2017. The University has relocated all of its health sciences disciplines and built new facilities on the campus in recent years. Among the new construction: an $80 million Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences Building and a $34.6 million Nursing Building. Nearly 1,500 undergraduate, professional, and graduate students pursue degrees at the 48-acre campus, which also houses programs offered by Eastern Washington University and is located just across the Spokane River from Gonzaga University.

Spokane is a major healthcare hub and the largest along the northern corridor of the United States between Minneapolis and Seattle. It offers the latest diagnostic and therapeutic care in all fields of medicine, and boasts four major hospitals, including Providence Health’s 644-bed Sacred Heart Medical Center. Complete with a rich cultural scene, historic neighborhoods, urban appeal, and easy access to four-season outdoor recreation, Spokane supplies a high quality of life for the nearly half million residents who live in the region.

Position Title: Assistant Research Professor

Duties and Responsibilities: Washington State University Health Sciences Spokane and the Initiative for Research and Education to Advance Community Health (IREACH) invites applications for an Assistant Research Professor with expertise in epidemiology, although individuals with other relevant training are encouraged to apply. The position will be embedded within the IREACH Methods Core, which comprises a collegial and highly collaborative team of PhD and master’s level epidemiologists and biostatisticians.

This position is a full-time, temporary 12-month position. Subsequent renewals are subject to satisfactory performance, mutual consent, and available funding. This is an entry level non-tenure track position. This position can be located in either Seattle or Spokane, WA, to be negotiated upon offer.

Position Details:
This position will work closely with clinician and non-clinician scientists to conduct research with a primary focus on improving health in minority and other underserved populations. Initially, the position will be fully funded by existing IREACH grants and will work with investigative teams to provide quantitative research methods support, including monitoring research implementation and data collection for efficiency, completeness, and data quality; crafting appropriate analytic strategies for scientific presentations and publications; and analyzing data or supervising data analyses with a biostatistician. In addition, this position will provide quantitative methods support for developing grant proposals with IREACH and other Washington State University colleagues, and will provide service consistent with expectations for all IREACH and WSU faculty.

Concurrently, this position will be responsible for developing an independent research program with the goal of securing extramural research funding. Support provided for this expectation includes professional copy editing, formal and informal mentoring in grant writing and career planning, and administrative support for preparing budgets and submitting grant applications to the National Institutes of Health and other extramural funding agencies. As funding is procured, support responsibilities for other IREACH projects will be reduced accordingly.

The successful candidate’s personal research focus is flexible but must relate in some way to advancing public health or reducing health disparities in minority or other underserved populations. Specific areas of need within IREACH include: advanced quantitative research methods; neuroepidemiology (including cognitive function, Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, and brain imaging); social epidemiology; health economics; biomarkers for disease susceptibility and trajectory; and implementation science. However, individuals with other research interests relevant to the IREACH mission are encouraged to apply.

Occasional travel (<10%) is required.

Teaching is not required or expected, but may be negotiated if desired.

Position Qualifications: Minimum/Required Qualifications:
A doctorate in epidemiology or in a closely related field (e.g., biostatistics, health policy, health economics).
A minimum of two years of applied experience conducting public health research.
Strong training and experience in quantitative research methods, including statistical analysis with complex data structures.
Experience conducting statistical analyses in SAS, Stata, or R.
Research focus relevant to public health and health disparities of minority and other underserved populations.
Outstanding ethical integrity and strong commitment to confidentiality in dealing with scientific data and results.
Strong writing skills, with the ability to convey scientific concepts with clear language.
Strong interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly about study design and analysis methods to colleagues who are not methodologists.
Proficient in the Microsoft Office suite of products.
Work requires evenings and weekends on occasion to meet the needs of the project.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with American Indian, Alaska Native, or other minority populations or underserved communities.
Experience learning about and adhering to preferences and expectations for research collaboration espoused by various tribal research partners.
Training or experience in cardiovascular disease epidemiology.
Training or experience in structural equation and latent variable modeling.
Training or experience in design and analysis of group randomized trials.
Publication history aligned with previous positions and training.
Experience planning and conducting other sophisticated statistical analyses such as prediction modeling, marginal structural models, quantitative bias analysis, machine learning, image analysis, or Bayesian methods.
