Wills Eye serves as the Department of Ophthalmology for Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson Medical College. Current research projects are supported by a combination of federal funding (e.g., CDC, DOD), industry support and private foundations and focus on evaluation of novel technologies and evaluation of barriers to care and strategies to improve adherence to treatment guidelines, particularly in underserved communities.

Duties and Responsibilities: Position Title: Biostatistician

Duties and Responsibilities: The Vision Research Center at Wills Eye Hospital, located in Philadelphia, PA, is expanding its vision research agenda, including its biostatistics collaboration and consultation services. To support this expansion we are seeking a full time biostatistician/data analyst with strong analytical skills and experience as a biostatistician in a clinical research environment, preferably in an academic setting, to join the Biostatistics Consulting Core (BCC). The BCC is responsible for providing statistical expertise in study design and data analysis to Wills Eye Hospital residents, fellows and faculty investigators interested in conducting clinical or experimental studies. The biostatistician will report to and work with the Director of the BCC to support large projects.

This position offers excellent opportunities for professional development, research collaboration with statistical responsibility in supporting grant applications, and publication of major papers. Strong candidates will be able to work effectively within a group setting in the areas of design of data collection instruments, study design, database management, statistical programming, analysis of data, statistical graphics and writing reports which include explanations of methods used and interpretations of results obtained. This individual must be effective at interacting and communicating with multidisciplinary teams including clinicians, trainees (e.g., residents, fellows), project staff, external collaborators and IT personnel involved in vision research. The successful candidate should have a track record of collaboration on various clinical research projects. It is expected that the candidate must be effective at setting goals, and prioritizing work to meet deadlines.

Specific responsibilities include:
Participating in BCC consultation and helping with study design including sample size calculations, data analysis plan, study form design, protocol reviews, etc.
Working closely with data management and clinical research staff on various projects
Creating, testing, and documenting efficient SAS programs to assist in data management, preparing data sets for analyses, including checking for data anomalies
Creating, testing, and documenting efficient SAS programs for statistical analyses and providing data summaries including graphical representations, tables and analysis reports
Developing SAS programs to track data quality on a regular basis, prepare data and generate results for monitoring reports in ongoing studies
Developing SAS programs to prepare data sets and generate results for study investigator meetings
Preparing summaries of methods and interpretations of results for analysis reports, presentations, study manuscripts, monitoring reports and grant applications
Supporting research projects based on large medical and registry databases
(e.g, Medicare) as needed and being responsive in a timely manner to a variety of analytic requests from study investigators, the Biostatistics Consulting Core Director and Vice Chair for Research Independent consultation for smaller consulting projects is also expected.

Position Qualifications: Required: 1) a master’s degree in Biostatistics, Statistics or similar quantitative field, 2) minimum of three years of experience in statistical consultation in a biomedical setting and excellent general written/verbal communication skills, 3) evidence of collaborative research and accomplishments of applying statistical methods including proven skills in design, analysis and reporting of clinical research in a clinical research, coordinating center or clinical trials environment, 4) excellent skills in SAS, R, and other statistical computational packages (experience with relational databases, SQL and SAS SQL is a plus), 5) strong analytic skills including correlated data, longitudinal, survival and multivariate data analysis, etc., 6) ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines with high quality programming, analysis and presentation skills, 7) strong ability in critical thinking, problem solving and attention to details, 8) ability to effectively communicate technical concepts both written and verbal, excellent skills in using Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, relational databases are expected.

Preferred: Experience with large data sets – electronic medical records, clinical trials and ophthalmic research is a plus. Five or more years of experience in biostatistical consultation and collaboration in an academic clinical research and/or coordinating center setting, management and/or analysis of clinical trials. Relevant publication record in peer-reviewed journals. Experience in teaching biostatistics to health professionals (Giving periodic presentations on statistical methods at training sessions/classes).
