Company Information: The Department: The Department of Mathematics & Statistics currently has 22 tenure-track faculty, 13 full time instructors, 80 graduate students, and 145 undergraduate majors. The department currently offers a B.S. and M.S. in Mathematics, an M.S. in Statistics, an M.S. in Data Science, and a Ph.D. in Computational Science and Statistics.

University/Community: South Dakota State University is a land-grant institution and is the state’s largest institution of higher education with an enrollment of 12,500 students. SDSU is located in Brookings, South Dakota, a community of 23,657 near the east central border of South Dakota on Interstate 29. The city has an excellent K-12 education system, is accessible to major medical facilities, has an active cultural and social environment, and has numerous lakes and parks within driving distance. It is 50 miles north of Sioux Falls, a city with a population of 170,000 in a metropolitan area of 250,000.

Position Title: ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR – STATISTICS

Duties and Responsibilities: Position Description: The Department of Mathematics and Statistics invites applications for a nine-month tenure track Faculty position in Statistics with principal duties to include research, teaching, and outreach with an emphasis on mathematical statistics, pattern recognition, large scale inference, spatiotemporal modeling, functional data analysis or sampling theory. This individual will become an integral member of a diversified and active team of Mathematics and Statistics faculty supporting the Ph.D. in Computational Science and Statistics, the Master’s degree in Statistics, the Master’s degree in Data Science and the Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics offered at SDSU. SDSU is especially interested in candidates that can contribute to and/or coordinate course offerings that address the experiences of underrepresented minorities in organizations. Responsibilities: Responsibilities will include teaching and advising in the undergraduate and graduate programs, research, service, and outreach to the campus and region. Teaching duties will include teaching three to six credits per semester of undergraduate and graduate courses, and advising undergraduate and graduate student projects and research. Research duties will include developing and maintaining a regionally relevant research program in mathematical statistics, pattern recognition, large scale inference, spatial and temporal modeling, functional data analysis or sampling theory, and developing sources of external research funding and graduate student support.

Position Qualifications: Required qualifications include an earned Ph.D. in Statistics or closely related field at the starting date of the appointment; broad training in statistical theory with emphasis on mathematical statistics, pattern recognition, large scale inference, spatial and temporal modeling, functional data analysis or sampling theory; potential to be an effective teacher, to conduct an effective research agenda, and to obtain external funding; effective written and verbal communication skills; and good collaborative and interpersonal skills.

Desired qualifications include a research agenda and proven record of funding in any of the following (or closely related) areas: mathematical statistics, pattern recognition, large scale inference, spatial and temporal modeling, functional data analysis, or sampling; and experience or expertise in the provision of applied statistical consultative services in various scientific disciplines. A candidate with enthusiasm and aptitude to supervise student research, practicum experiences and internships is desirable.
