Company Information: Joint position between BioSS and the School of Mathematics of the University of Edinburgh

BioSS is one of the Main Research Providers for strategic research in environmental, agricultural and biological science funded by the Scottish Government’s Rural and Environment Science and Analytical Services Division.

The School of Mathematics is situated in the James Clerk Maxwell Building within the King’s Buildings campus, 4 km south of Edinburgh city centre. There are over 50 academic and related staff and around 60 research students. The School also runs a number of MSc programmes. Undergraduate courses are given to around 2000 students in any one year. The administration of undergraduate courses is co-ordinated by the Mathematical Teaching Organisation (MTO), which comprises the Teaching Administrator, Deputy Teaching Administrator and administrative staff.

The School was judged “Excellent” in the last Teaching Quality Assessment and was rated 5* (Pure), 5 (Applied) and 4 (Statistics and Operational Research) in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise. It is committed to maintaining and improving the quality of its teaching provision, including the related administrative procedures. Within the School there are a wide range of research areas and many seminars and colloquia are run throughout the academic year.

Position Title: Principal Researcher in Applied Statistical Methodology & Reader in Statistics

Duties and Responsibilities: Biomathematics & Statistics Scotland (BioSS) and the University of Edinburgh (UoE) School of Mathematics seek an applied statistician with a strong methodological background for a joint post (65% BioSS; 35% UoE) to pursue a portfolio of statistical research motivated by collaborations on emerging problems in biological, environmental, agricultural and/or socio-economic science.

The post will be based in a stimulating working environment (located in adjacent accommodation within the James Clerk Maxwell Building at the King’s Buildings campus of the University of Edinburgh with a shared common room and excellent facilities) with extensive opportunities to develop collaborations with scientists in both the research institute and university sectors.

In addition to the pursuit of independent statistical research across the institutions, the successful applicant will lead the Statistical Methodology research theme in BioSS, engage in knowledge transfer activities including postgraduate supervision, and deliver and develop teaching at all levels.

The post-holder will have separate, but mutually dependent, contracts with each employing organisation.

Position Qualifications: As well as having a very strong statistical/mathematical background, applicants should have:
A research track record of international standing and impact, including a substantial publication record, with evidence of methodological development to solve important problems arising in scientific research;
Evidence of research leadership, including project initiation, a track record in securing funding for research and achievement of stated milestones and deliverables;
Evidence of ability to plan, prepare and deliver excellent University teaching at all levels, including through the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students;
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
