Postdoctoral Associate
University of Pittsburgh

Company Information: The University of Pittsburgh has a vibrant, collegial, and thriving research environment: it ranks ninth nationally in federal science and engineering funding, according to a report from the National Science Foundation. It ranks fifth among U.S. universities in terms of the competitive grants awarded to members of its faculty by the National Institutes of Health.

Position Title: Postdoctoral Associate

Duties and Responsibilities: We are seeking two motivated and creative postdoctoral associates with quantitative research backgrounds to join an active and collegial research team led by Ryan L. Minster and Daniel E. Weeks in the Department of Human Genetics, Graduate School of Public Health, University of Pittsburgh. The successful candidate will conduct cutting-edge NIH-funded research investigating the genetics of adiposity-related traits in a unique sample of Samoans. The work lies in the area of applied statistical genetics, and involves fine-mapping and gene discovery using variant data imputed from a panel of whole genome sequenced Samoans to carry out single variant and gene-based association tests of a variety of adiposity-related phenotypes. This rich data set includes extensive dietary and physical activity data. There will also be opportunities to participate in NHLBI TOPMed consortium-wide analyses.

The postdoctoral associates will be responsible for planning experiments, developing protocols, conducting research, analyzing data, making presentations at national and international meetings, publishing data in peer-reviewed journals, and assisting junior laboratory personnel. The successful candidates will be offered a high level of independence. Drs. Minster and Weeks will mentor the postdoctoral associates and provide a highly supportive environment to help in the transition to independence.

Position Qualifications: The candidate must hold a PhD or equivalent in Statistical Genetics, Statistics, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Computational Biology, or other disciplines with strong quantitative backgrounds.
Prior experience with the following is preferred: statistical genetics, bioinformatics, association analysis, data management, whole genome sequencing data, and scientific writing. Programming experience in R and Unix scripting is required.
In addition, the candidate should 1) be hard-working, self-motivated, and eager to learn; 2) be able to work both independently and as a member of a research team; 3) be fluent in written and spoken English; and 4) have an interest in the genetics of adiposity.
