The Statistical Sciences department provides statistical expertise and support to all of Sandia mission areas. Statisticians within the department participate as collaborators, principal investigators, and consultants in a broad range of activities that extend across and outside the Laboratories. The activities include project participation (via statistical analysis and methodology development), applied research and development, teaching, and publishing. Areas of emphasis include design of experiments, industrial statistics, statistical quality control, probabilistic modeling and computer simulation, Bayesian statistics, spatial data analysis, functional data analysis, data mining, reliability and maintainability analysis, margin and uncertainty analysis, and metrology.
Position Title: R&D Mathematics (Experienced)
Duties and Responsibilities: We are seeking a R&D S&E, Mathematics.The goal of the hire is to significantly increase Sandia’s capacity to conduct high quality interdisciplinary research across the lab.In particular, this position is for an experienced statistician to serve in a leadership role for the Statistical Sciences department with the following responsibilities.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Conduct and manage technical work and lead interdisciplinary teams in developing and implementing innovative statistical solutions to challenging National security problems.
Assist department manager in strategic planning and help grow the statistics capability for Sandia.
Advance and guide a research portfolio for the department and increase visibility of the department in the broader statistics community.
Position Qualifications: Required:
PhD in Statistics or related field plus 10 years of relevant experience or MS in Statistics or related field plus 15 years of relevant experience;
Programming experience in MATLAB, R, or a related language.
Publication record indicative of relevant research expertise;
Strong interest in or demonstrated capacity to team in an interdisciplinary R&D environment;
Demonstrated excellence in research and teaching as evidenced by a history of peer-reviewed publications and involvement in funded studies. Preference will be given to those with experience leading statistical research projects as well as mentoring students and/or junior staff in statistical research;
Experience and comfort collaborating with scientists from varied backgrounds with a preference for experience working in an engineering environment;
Demonstrated scientific productivity and a record of advancing the state-of-the-art in applied statistical methodologies, with a preference for those with experience in uncertainty quantification for computational simulation, functional data analysis, spatial and/or time series statistics, and Bayesian statistics;
Demonstrated ability to acquire, prepare, and characterize real-world data for subsequent analysis;
Demonstrated research community leadership through activities such as participation in student or professional organizations, service on committees, workshop and/or conference organization, and editorial roles.
