Professor Emeritus William Mendenhall III created an endowed fellowship for the Department of Statistics to support graduate students. It was given in honor of Professor Mendenhall's wife, Joan S. Mendenhall, the former First Lady of the Department of Statistics. During the early years of the department Mrs. Mendenhall played a vital part in creating a family atmosphere within the department. Faculty and former graduate students speak fondly of her warm friendship and elegance as a hostess. William Mendenhall received his Ph.D. from North Carolina State University . He achieved distinction on the faculty at Bucknell University, before being recruited to the University of Florida in 1963 to be the founding chairman of the new Department of Statistics.
