HOW THE PROCESS WORKS

After the February 1st deadline has passed, the Department of Statistics’ Graduate Committee begins their review of applications.  The various Graduate Committee members review applications from the countries that they have academic expertise in.  They present to the Graduate Coordinator the applicants they believe are most likely to succeed in our program.  The Graduate Coordinator takes the committees' top choices and ranks them by various criteria like GRE scores, strength of the program they graduated from, the letters of support received on their behalf and the applicants overall ability in the quantitative sciences.

Once the applications have been ranked, the Graduate Coordinator begins to make offers by e-mail to the top ranked applicants.  If those offers are declined, the Graduate Coordinator proceeds to the next highest ranking applicant.  This process continues until all available funds for fellowships and assistantships have been committed. If a student is accepted and also applied to the QSE3 IGERT, the IGERT Council is notified of that acceptance. At that point the student is considered for the QSE3 IGERT program and will be notified of acceptance separately.

Although our process is long it is very thorough and fair.  Because our system is ranked we do not have a precise GRE score that guarantees admittance nor a particular university that automatically gives an applicant admission.  Those we admit, we provide with either an assistantship or fellowship and a tuition waiver.

Due to limited funds, we are able to admit only 12-15 applicants per year.  We generally receive an average of 150-200 applications per year which makes admission to our program very competitive.

The staff does not have access to the ranking list so they are unable to tell applicants what their chances of admission are.  If you applied but didn’t get an e-mail offer in the beginning of the recruiting season, be patient since you may get an offer later in the spring term.

You will be able to view whether or not the department has received your application material by going to Application Summary and identifying the last four digits of your U.F. I.D.  This web site does not show personal information nor does it show whether the applicant has been accepted or denied admission.  This data base ONLY shows what materials have been received on behalf of the applicant.
