Basic Integration Tutorial
Announcements:
Date 09/26:
TA will hold hours 5pm-6pm today.

Date 09/23:
Some additional problems to practise on are : 5.16a, 5.19a, 5.22

Date 09/19:
A review session will be held in FLO 230 at 09:35-11:30 on September 25th for those interested.

Date 09/17:
Practise set 1 is posted.

Date 09/16:
If everyone is okay with it we will change the Exam 1 date from Wednesday the 25th to Friday 27th so you can take full advantage of the office hours. The exam is IN CLASS and you will need:
  • Calculator
  • Formula sheet (only formulas no sentences) double sided that you create. Don't forget any formulas becausenone will be given during the exam.
A set of practise questions will be posted this week. No solutions will be given so make sure you utilize the office hours (and maybe work in groups).

Date 09/13:
Solution to quiz 4 has been posted.

Date 09/10:

An updated version (due to typo) was posted of the basic integration tutorial. This reminds me, anyone catching a typo gets an extra point towards the quiz, even if that means 11/10.

Once we cover the normal distribution we will pick up steam to get to CHapter 3 of the notes, so be prepared to do some reading on your own.

Date 09/06:
A link to introduce you to some basics of integration has been added (to the left, under links).

Date 08/26:
Quiz 1 will only count as extra credit (for the quiz section of the final grade). If you registered late and did not take it...no worries.

Homework:
Suggested exercises (no quiz) For 10/04: 6.4c, 6.5, 6.6, 10.3, 10.7, 10.18

Quiz 5 For 09/20: 11.39, 4.42, 4.47, 4.59, 5.4, 5.5, 5.8, 5.11, extra problems below

  1. x 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
    y 2 1 4 3 7 5 6
    - Calculate the sample correlation coefficient of rxy (x with y). Describe the association between x and y.
    - Calculate the sample variance of x and of y. Use this to find the sample covariance.
    - Calculate the sample correlation coefficient of ryx (y with x), how does it relate to rxy
    - Add 5 points to each y observation and calculate the new rxy.
  2. A large freight elevator can transport a maximum of 9800 pounds. Suppose a load of cargo containing 49 boxes must be transported via the elevator. Experience has shown that the weight of boxes of this type of cargo follows a distribution with mean 205 pounds and standard deviation of 15 pounds. Based on this information, what is the probability that all 49 boxes can be safely loaded onto the freight elevator and transported?
5.4, 5.5, 5.8, 5.11

Quiz 4 For 09/13: Use table from 4.25 to find E(Y) and V(Y).

Problem below
Let Y be a continuous random variable with p.d.f. f(y)=8y,\; 0 < y < 0.5
  1. Find the mean
  2. Find the mean of 0.7(Y)-2
  3. Find the 75th percentile
  4. Find the variance
  5. Find the variance of 0.7(Y)-2
  6. Find P(0.1<Y<0.4)
  7. Find P(0.1<Y<0.7)
  8. Find P(Y=0.3)
4.23, 4.26, 4.28 4.42

Quiz 3 For 09/06: 4.8, 4.15, 4.18, 4.20, 4.25

Quiz 2 For 08/30: 3.22, 3.23, 3.27, 4.5, 4.6, 4.7, 4.10 and the following problem:

Use data in ".xls" format or data in ".txt" that contains monthly data of production quantity and cost of a manufacturing plant.
Find the following:
  1. Mean, Quartiles and Variance of "Production" and "Cost" for the whole duration.
  2. Same as (1) but for each 12 month (annual) period.
  3. "Production" is in units of thousdands (1000s). Find the mean and standard deviation of "Production" (for the whole duration) in hundreds (100s)
  4. Boxplot of "Production" for the whole duration and then 4 boxplots for each year.
  5. Histogram of "Cost" for the whole duration and then 4 histograms for each year.

Quiz 1 For 08/23:
  • 3.19: A study on the reliability of diesel engines was conducted on 14 engines. The time (in days) until the engine failed is given. The study lasted 300 days and two engines were still operating but were turned off.
    Time: 130, 67, 300*, 234, 90, 256, 87, 120, 201, 178, 300*, 106, 289, 74
    • Calculate the measures of center (mean and median) for the 14 engines
    • What are the implications of computing the measures of center when some of the exact failure times are not known?
  • In classroom A of 33 students, the average score was 85.4, while in classroom B of 65 students, the average score was 81.1. What is the average of all students (98 students)?
